Alternatives/Ahrefs

Ahrefs alternatives for a one-product founder

What to use instead of Ahrefs when you run one product, check authority once a day, and want your agent to read the numbers — including when Ahrefs is still the right answer.

Facts checked 2026-08-12. Prices and limits are the vendor's published numbers on that date.

If you are looking for an Ahrefs alternative because Ahrefs costs €119/mo and you check one number once a week, you do not need a smaller Ahrefs — you need a different shape of tool. This page covers the three realistic options for a solo product, what each actually gives you, and the cases where you should stay on Ahrefs and close this tab.

Short answer: verify your site in Ahrefs Free (formerly Webmaster Tools) for backlink and site-audit data you cannot get anywhere else for free; use agentsgym if what you want is one authority reading per day, referring-domain movement, cookieless traffic and AEO scoring in one place your agent can read; pay for Ahrefs Starter (€27/mo) or higher the moment you need keyword research or rank tracking.

Who should stay with Ahrefs

Written first, because it is most of you:

  • You do keyword research — Keywords Explorer is a paid feature and nothing free replaces it.
  • You need rank tracking for a keyword set.
  • You analyse competitor domains. Ahrefs Free covers verified sites only: “Ahrefs’ subscription plans allow you to analyze competing websites (unverified websites).”
  • You want a browsable backlink index — every link, filterable, exportable.
  • You run a crawling site audit across thousands of URLs and act on the issue list.
  • You do SEO for clients and need reports with a recognised metric on them.

agentsgym does none of those things and is not trying to.

The three options, side by side

What “alternative” actually means here

Ahrefs is an index. You pay for coverage of the whole web: every domain, every keyword, every link. If you use that coverage, it is cheap at €119.

agentsgym is a watch on one domain. It answers a much smaller question — did the authority of my product move, is anyone landing on it, and is the page citable by an AI engine — once a day, and it hands the answer to your agent instead of to you.

The switch is worth it when you notice you are paying index prices to read four numbers.

What you lose by switching

Say it plainly, because you will find out anyway:

  1. A different number. agentsgym’s Domain Rating is DataForSEO’s rank normalised to 0–100. It correlates with, but is not, Ahrefs DR. If a client or a directory asks for “DR 30+”, they mean Ahrefs’ number.
  2. No link list. You see how many referring domains and how that count moved. You do not see the links themselves.
  3. No keywords. No volumes, no difficulty, no positions. Search Console is the opt-in source for indexing issues today (submitted pages Google has not indexed); per-query reporting on the dashboard is the next release, and this page will say so until it ships.
  4. No crawler. AEO scans score a URL you point at, one page at a time.

What you get that Ahrefs does not sell

  • One reading per project per day, kept forever. The chart is the product: authority and referring domains on the same timeline as your traffic.
  • Cookieless analytics on the same screen. The visitor id is a hash of a daily-rotating salt; the IP is used to compute it and then dropped, never stored — so no consent banner for the analytics itself. See analytics without a cookie banner.
  • Deterministic AEO scoring. Eight on-page dimensions (crawler access, structured data, answer-first content, entity authority, Q&A format, freshness, technical hygiene, llms.txt) with ranked fixes. On-page signals only: it measures how citable a page is, not whether an engine has cited it.
  • A public share page and an SVG badge — the “DR 41” proof directories and sponsors ask for, without an Ahrefs seat.
  • MCP. Your agent calls projects_list, project_get, score_url and applies the fixes itself. That is the actual reason this exists — see Claude Code + agentsgym.

Moving over

There is no export/import: the numbers are time series, and neither tool exports the other’s history.

  1. Add your domain as a project. The first authority reading lands on the next daily cron run.
  2. Paste one script tag into <head>: <script defer src="https://api.agentsgym.com/t.js" data-key="YOUR_KEY"></script>.
  3. Keep Ahrefs Free verified in parallel — it costs nothing and keeps the link list available for the day you need it.
  4. Connect Search Console (read-only, opt-in) if you want the query side later.

Two tools, €0 and $0, covering more than one €119 seat did for a single product.

Questions

Is there a free Ahrefs alternative?
Yes — two kinds. Ahrefs Free (Webmaster Tools) is free for sites you verify ownership of, and agentsgym is free for one project with a daily authority reading, referring domains and cookieless analytics. Neither lets you research a domain you do not own: agentsgym tracks projects you add and verify, and Ahrefs Free explicitly excludes unverified sites.
Does agentsgym show Ahrefs DR?
No. agentsgym computes its own 0–100 Domain Rating from DataForSEO backlink data. It moves for the same reason Ahrefs DR moves — new referring domains — but it is a different number from a different index and is never presented as Ahrefs DR.
What does agentsgym not replace?
Keyword research, rank tracking, a browsable backlink index, and a crawling site auditor. If you need any of those, Ahrefs (or a paid Ahrefs plan plus their free tier) is still the tool.
Can my coding agent read the data?
Yes. agentsgym ships an MCP endpoint with a personal API key, so Claude Code or any MCP client can call projects_list, project_get and score_url directly instead of you opening a dashboard.

Try it on your own domain

One project is free: a daily Domain Rating reading, referring domains, cookieless pageviews and AEO scans — all readable by your agent over MCP.
